On January 23, 2016, the Calgary Herald featured an article titled "Scientists mapping deadly radon in Calgary" (by Michele Jarvie). The article profiles the work of a Calgary scientist to understand the risk of radon in Calgary. Preliminary data is suggesting one in five homes is above the acceptable limit for radon gas. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada. While Health Canada has set an acceptable rate of 200 Bq/m3, the WHO has recommended a lower level of 100 Bq/m3. Some Calgary homes have tested as high as 4000 Bq/m3.
